Bcc #7
Overview
Presented at STADIUM to coincide with the 2012 Armory Show, Bcc#7 was a collaborative exhibition and performance event co-curated with Karen Archey. Originating in Berlin as a curatorial framework where all exhibited materials must be digitally transmitted and received, Bcc ("blind carbon copy") interrogated the rapid shifts in information exchange and abbreviated digital communication. For this seventh iteration, six European artists were paired with six New York–based artists to generate new, collaborative physical works governed strictly by the parameters and character limits of social media and microblogging platforms.
Project Context & Curatorial Role
As Co-Curator alongside Karen Archey, I developed the project structure, artist pairings, and site-specific execution, exploring how early social media networks could serve as instructional tools for physical art production.
European artists transmitted step-by-step artistic instructions across digital platforms—utilizing short-form messaging and social media networks—to their American counterparts in New York. Operating within strict character counts and platform constraints, the New York artists interpreted and realized these instructions physically within the gallery space.
Opening as a live activation event on March 9, 2012, followed by an exhibition of the resulting works and digital remnants, Bcc#7 fostered new international exchanges between emerging net-art and conceptual practitioners across Europe and New York.
