11th Annual Next Wave Art
Overview
Conceived in 2001 under the curatorial direction of Dan Cameron, visual arts programming became an integral pillar of BAM’s iconic Next Wave Festival—an annual series established in 1983 that permanently reshaped New York's cultural landscape. For its 11th season, the exhibition transformed BAM’s public and exhibition spaces to showcase site-specific installations and works by prominent contemporary artists working across New York.
Project Context & Curatorial Role
Installed across BAM’s Peter Jay Sharp Building, the 11th season highlighted major new site-specific commissions alongside works across diverse media, activating non-traditional exhibition sites to engage performing arts patrons and gallery visitors alike.
New Commissions
David Scanavino: Created a major, site-specific, linoleum tile floor installation tailored to the architecture of the Leonard Natman Room, continuing his signature exploration of color, industrial materials, and public space.
Denise Kupferschmidt: Executed two monumental, 25-foot custom murals for the Dorothy W. Levitt Lobby, bringing her bold, graphic figurative forms into dialogue with the building's historic architecture.
Rachel Owens: Installed a major new site-specific sculptural commission conceived specifically for BAM's Lepercq Space.
